The two separated earlier this year, shortly before word got out in the press that he had fathered a child outside the marriage, with a woman who had worked for the family as housekeeper and personal assistant. It is believed Maria moved out of the family home when she learned of the existence of the child, before the separation announcement was made.
Until just now, when the divorce papers filed in court by Maria have emerged online, many still believed that the two would find a way to work through their differences and problems, and eventually reconcile.
TMZ got a hold of the documents and, as speculated before, Maria and Arnold did not sign a prenup before the wedding, which means the money they both made during the 25 years of marriage will be divided in equal shares.
In the papers, Maria doesn’t say anything about Arnold’s transgression and the fact that he basically kept his second family under the same roof with the first, but cites “irreconcilable differences” as the cause of the split.
“Shriver is asking for spousal support and wants the judge to deny Arnold the right to ask for support for himself – though it’s highly unlikely he would,” TMZ says.
“Shriver is asking for joint custody of their minor children, who she names in the document as 17-year-old ‘Patrick Arnold Shriver Schwarzenegger’ and 13-year-old ‘Christopher Sargent Shriver Schwarzenegger’,” the e-zine further notes.
Also, “Shriver is asking Arnold to pay the attorneys’ fees of both parties. As for the date Arnold and Maria separated... it isn’t specified in the divorce papers,” TMZ adds.
Maria is also asking the judge to grant the divorce and set a later date for the division of property. As we also noted on a previous occasion, given that she’s been married to Arnold for so long and the lack of a prenup, she could get between $100 million and $150 million in the settlement.
