Summon Night: Twin Age uses a new control mechanic that focuses on the touchscreen of the DS handheld, with players needing to wield the stylus and press on the screen to move the main character, while attacking can be achieved with just a quick tap. The game is a regular hack-and-slash role-playing title, controlled from a top-down perspective, with characters being able to auto attack enemies until they're given another command by the player. Combat isn't just about hitting enemies with axes or other weapons, as players can also choose different spells, skills and items that can be selected from two pop-up windows that appear on the screen.
Like many Japanese role-playing games, Summon Nights: Twin Age uses a party system where players can control the characters in their group, as well as summon new creatures to help in difficult battles, which can also be controlled directly by the gamers, thus earning more experience and progressing through the ranks.
The game's story takes place on Clardona, a fictional setting where humans and Kascuza, hybrids between regular humans and beast-like creatures, are engaged in a bitter war, which upsets the third faction of the world, the Spirits, which can not only interact with humans, but also with Kascuza, by summoning beasts.
